PRESS RELEASE: Harwich High lighthouse will be lit up for ‘Armed Forces Day’
Harwich Town Council is very pleased by the very positive reaction to its decision to illuminate the Harwich High Lighthouse on occasions important to the local community.
Having installed the lighting equipment and working in conjunction with Tendring District Council (TDC) and the Harwich Society, Harwich Town Council has a license from TDC to illuminate the lighthouse on up to 12 occasions each year and has drawn up a diary of occasions it believes it is important to celebrate or commemorate.
The next in this year’s diary of commemorations is Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27th June and the High Lighthouse will be illuminated red, white and blue on that evening in recognition of how important our armed forces are to our country and our community.
Cllr. Garry Calver who was lead member for the project to install the lighting equipment, says, “Harwich is very fortunate to have such an iconic building to provide a visual focus for commemoration and celebration and we have been delighted by the very positive reaction within the local community. I’m sure the reaction will be equally positive for Armed Forces Day.”
Working with TDC, Harwich Town Council purchased the lighting equipment and TDC provides the power source. Harwich’s High Lighthouse is a Harwich Society run visitor attraction and they are fully supportive of the idea to use the lighthouse for a visual act of celebration and commemoration.
As part of the commemoration the Armed Forces Day flag will be flown above the Harwich Guildhall.
