HARWICH GUILDHALL TO OPEN FOR NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEKEND
Through the work of its honorary archivists Harwich Town Council supports National heritage Weekend and, as a result, the Harwich Guildhall will be open to the public free of charge on Saturday 13th September between 2PM and 4PM.
The Guildhall is a fascinating building to explore and visitors will be able to see the town’s civic regalia including the 17th century mace and the Mayor’s chain, the 18th century town gaol and the portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II signed by Her Majesty when she visited in 2004.
Mayor of Harwich, Cllr. Pam Morrison, says, “Harwich is fortunate to have so many attractions open to visitors on National Heritage Weekend and we are pleased to add the Guildhall to the list. Anyone visiting the numerous attractions opened by Harwich Society volunteers along with the Harwich Guildhall will soon understand why our town is referred to as Historic Harwich.”
If you are interested in where archery practise took place in Dovercourt during the 16th century or how Samuel Pepys and Sir Anthony Deane established the Royal Naval Dockyard in Harwich a hundred years later then a visit to the Harwich Guildhall on Saturday 13th September is highly recommended.
“Our honorary archivists do amazing work overseeing our extensive archive,” continued Cllr. Morrison. “The Guildhall’s archive contains original documents dating back many centuries on all aspects of Harwich’s remarkable history and they bring it to life for us.”
