High lighthouse to be lit up three times in September

Since installing lighting equipment to enable the Harwich High Lighthouse to be illuminated to mark special occasions, Harwich Town Council has drawn up a diary of events important to the town and, in conjunction with TDC and the Harwich Society, is lighting up the iconic structure as a mark of visual support, respect and commemoration on these occasions.

There will be three such illuminations during September and, having lit up the lighthouse in red for Merchant navy Day, the lighthouse will be illuminated red, white and blue for Emergency Services Day on Tuesday 9th September and will then be illuminated blue for Dementia Awareness to coincide with Harwich Town Council’s ‘Memory Walk’ on the weekend of 19th and 20th September.

Cllr. Garry Calver, who led the council’s project to install the lighting equipment, says, “The illumination of the High Lighthouse on these important anniversaries has been extremely well received throughout the community and has shown our town’s support for so many aspects of life within the Harwich Peninsula.  In a small way it is proving to be a very positive expression of our thanks and support.”

Harwich Town Council has been given a license by TDC to illuminate the lighthouse on up to 12 occasions each year and TDC provides the power source.  The final illumination for 2026 will be in November for ‘White Ribbon Day’ supporting the need to prevent violence against women and young girls.
