Harwich to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day
Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated each year on 27th January which was the date in 1945 when the Auschwitz extermination camp was liberated.
Since the installation of the ‘Safe Haven’ memorial to the Kindertransport on Harwich Quay, Harwich Town Council, working in conjunction with Harwich Kindertransport Learning, has arranged a service of commemoration using the memorial as its setting.
Mayor of Harwich, Cllr. Pam Morrison, says, “This will be the 3rd annual commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day on Harwich Quay and each year we are seeing more and more people wishing to pay their respects and join us at the ‘Safe Haven’ memorial. Last year we had members of the Jewish community come from London to be part of the Harwich commemoration.”
The brief service of commemoration will begin at 11AM on Monday 27th January and will include contributions from students at the Harwich High School alongside members of the Jewish community. All are welcome to attend the commemoration which it is anticipated will last for around 20 minutes.
“Harwich is very proud of its links to the Kindertransport and the message of Holocaust Memorial Day is one that must never be forgotten,” continued Cllr. Pam Morrison. “This annual commemoration allows Harwich to play its part in keeping this message alive.”
