PRESS RELEASE – Harwich and Dovercourt’s seafront – a great place to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society
Harwich Town Council will be stepping out to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Society with a sponsored walk on our local seafront and is encouraging local residents to join in.
The Alzheimer’s Society runs ‘Memory Walks’ throughout the country to raise funds and awareness and Harwich Town Council is arranging this particular walk under that umbrella. The walk will take place on Sunday 20th September setting off at 10AM from the Leading Lights on Dovercourt seafront and walking along the promenade to the Low Lighthouse on Harwich seafront and back. This will be the 3rd year that the Harwich Memory Walk has taken place.
Anyone wishing to join in either for the entire walk or for part of it is asked to register their intention with the Alzheimer’s Society at: Take on your own Memory Walk (Alzheimer’s Society) in order to receive their free promotional T shirt and fund-raising pack. It is free to register and there is no commitment.
Although encouraged, it is not compulsory to register in order to take part and the council will be delighted to see anyone who wishes to support this fantastic cause. Harwich Town Council will present a certificate to all those who complete the walk.
As a further visual show of support for those living with Dementia, Harwich Town Council will be lighting up the High Lighthouse in blue for the weekend.
The Mayor of Harwich, Cllr. Sean Fay, says, “There are very few people whose lives have not been touched by someone living with Dementia and Harwich Town Council tries to reflect that within its activities. This walk along our beautiful seafront is a small way of bringing everyone together in support of this important cause.”
Harwich Town Council is a ‘Dementia friendly’ council with all members and officers having undergone Dementia awareness training.
The council runs monthly ‘Music and Memory’ singalong sessions at the Park Pavilion for those living with Dementia and their friends and families. These take place on the 3rd Wednesday of each month commencing at 1.30PM.
Harwich Town Council believes that this sponsored walk will be a great way to make use of our wonderful seafront to raise awareness and funds for a very important cause.
This event also has the full support of the Harwich Society and, as the Harwich Society’s Maritime Museum marks the half way point on the walk, the Harwich Society volunteers who staff the museum will be on hand as stewards at the half way point.
“Anyone wishing to take part can do so and need only walk as far as they are comfortable with before turning back,” continued Cllr. Fay. “We are now just hoping for good weather and a great turn out!”
