PRESS RELEASE: Harwich High Lighthouse to be illuminated to celebrate ‘Pride month’

Harwich Town Council has purchased lighting equipment to allow the illumination of Harwich High Lighthouse and, working in conjunction with Tendring District Council and the Harwich Society, the lighthouse can now be lit up to celebrate and commemorate specific occasions.

The Harwich Society leases the High Lighthouse as a visitor attraction and is an enthusiastic supporter of the illumination project.  Working with TDC and the Harwich Society, Harwich Town Council has created a focal point for visual commemorations and celebrations using this iconic local landmark.

The council has drawn up a diary of occasions and commemorations when the lighthouse will be illuminated and, this year, it has already been illuminated to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day and World Cancer Day.  It is now to be illuminated to celebrate ‘Pride Month’.

Pride Month runs throughout June and it has been decided to illuminate the lighthouse on the weekend of 13th and 14th June for this purpose.

Pride Month is an annual nationwide celebration and observance to honour LGBTQ+ communities, recognise their history and advocate for equal rights.  It serves as both a joyful festival and an on-going campaign for social equality.

Cllr. Garry Calver, who was the lead member for the installation of the lighting, says, “TDC provides the power source for the lighting equipment and we have a license to illuminate on twelve occasions each year.  The council has drawn up a diary of important and appropriate occasions and Pride is one of the key celebrations within this diary.”
