Harwich High Lighthouse to be illuminated for World Cancer Day
Harwich Town Council has recently installed lighting equipment in order to enable the Harwich High Lighthouse to be illuminated on specific occasions. This is being done under a license from Tendring District Council that allows up to twelve illuminations each year and in conjunction with the Harwich Society which holds a lease on the lighthouse as a visitor attraction.
Cllr. Garry Calver, who was the council’s lead member on the illumination project, says, “With the support of both TDC and the Harwich Society, Harwich Town Council is very pleased to be able to illuminate the Harwich High lighthouse for specific commemorations and celebrations. Because we are limited to 12 illuminations each year the council has drawn up a list of annual events it believes appropriate and the next ins World Cancer Awareness Day on Wednesday 4th February.”
The colours that represent World Cancer Awareness Day are blue and orange and the intention is to illuminate the Harwich High lighthouse in these colours on the evening of Wednesday, 4th February.
“There can be few families living in Harwich and Dovercourt whose lives have not been touched by cancer so all of Harwich Town Council’s members were keen for this day to be on our list,” continued Cllr. Garry Calver.” People were pleased to see the lighthouse lit up for Holocaust Memorial Day and we are sure that local residents will agree that World Cancer Day is equally appropriate.”
